• The winner of this competitive section featuring the most daring Spanish cinema will be screened again on Saturday 27 at 6:15 p.m. at Cine Yelmo Las Arenas
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Wednesday, April 24, 2024. The feature film On the Go, by María Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro, has won the Panorama Spain Award of this 23rd Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival. The jury charged with evaluating the works competing in this section, made up of María Campaña Ramia, Davide Abbatescianni and Ana Isabel Strindberg, has announced their decision this Wednesday morning, April 24.
Of the five feature films and four short films, they have awarded On the Go because it is “a constant transit, from the material that inspires it to its final destination.” The three of them said that they “were struck by the uniqueness of its bizarre yet deep leading characters, its freewheeling yet rigorous film language, and its playful but tactful approach to love, queerness, friendship and motherhood.” The film, they added, “delivers a rare freshness and audacity in terms of its acting performances, cinematography and editing, and embraces the viewer who embarks on a gentle yet radical journey through the South of Spain and the four corners of the body.” For this award, the Festival will grant a 5,000 prize to its filmmakers María Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro.
In addition, the jury has given a Special Mention to Trenc d’Alba (Crack of Dawn) (Spain, 2023, 28 min.) by Anna Llargués. They have highlighted “the subtlety and delicacy of the mise-en–scène of a story of resistance and preservation of the collective memory of a family.”
Regarding the winner, On the Go, it is María Gisèle Royo and Julia de Castro’s first feature, “a free-spirited film shot on a shoestring budget,” by its two co-directors, as Elodie Mellado, programmer of the section, stated in the catalog. In it, we follow Milagros’ desire to be a mother and Jonathan’s wish to escape loneliness. “A gloriously queer and deliriously funny road movie that stands out for its brilliant use of 16mm,” said the Festival programming team when its selection was announced. The audience will have another chance to see this drama on the big screen next Saturday, April 27, at 6:15 p.m. at Cine Yelmo Las Arenas.
