Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Friday, March 17, 2017. The Monopol Music Festival’s fourth edition, the second one integrated within the contents of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, thanks to Dorado Especial, proposes a selection of 20 music documentaries and 9 concerts for the edition starting next Friday, March 31.
The Monopol Music Festival keeps its philosophy of combining film and music in its program through the screening of music documentaries in its regular venue, the Monopol Cinema, the organization of parallel activities, and the hosting of concerts in different places within the city. After last edition, where the festival broke attendance records, the MMF presents this 2017 a program that reflects its growth as a national leading festival.
Among the scheduled documentaries there are titles of different styles, most of which have been screened in big film events such as Miss Sharon Jones!, by Barbara Kopple (2016 USA), selected by the Toronto International Festival, DOC NYC, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam; One More Time with Feeling: Nick Cave, a work by Andrew Dominik (2015, UK, France) and which was screened at the Venice, Rio de Janeiro and Dubai festivals; Supersonic: Oasis, by Mat Whitecross (2016, UK), which was part of the Amsterdamned and Taipei Golden Horse’s contents; Gimme Danger: The Stooges, by Jim Jarmusch (2016, USA) and scheduled at Cannes, Toronto and New York; as well as The Beatles: Eight days a week, the touring years, by Ron Howard (2016, USA) and screened at the Rio de Janeiro and Cinedays festivals; Omega: Enrique Morente, by José Sánchez-Montes and Gervando Iglesias (2016, Spain) selected by the Beefeater Festival.
In addition to this, we shall find films such as Arctic Superstar, by Simen Braathen (2016, Norway); Sonita, by Gerd Haag (2015, Iran, Germany, Switzerland); Wacken 3D, by Norbert Heiitker (2014, Germany); Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (2004, USA); Where You’re Meant to Be, by Paul Fegan (2016, UK); SCORE: A Film Music Documentary, by Matt Schrader (2016, USA); Carlos Catana Documental, by José María de Páiz (2017, Spain); A Song For You: The Austin City Limits Story, by Keith Maitland (2016, USA); El camino más largo: Bunbury, by Alexis Morante (2016, Spain); Mali Blues, by Lutz Gregor (2015, Germany, Mali); Imagine Waking Up Tomorrow And All The Music Has Disappeared, by Stefan Schwietert (2015, Germany, Switzerland, UK); Rumba 3, by David Casademunt and Joan Capdevila (2015, Spain) and We Like It Like That. The story of the Latin Bogaloo, by Mathew Ramirez Warren (2015, USA) and Casamance: La banda sonora de un viaje by Paloma Zapata (2016, Spain).
Regarding the Monopol Music Festival, it has first-class performers such as Julieta Venegas, an international artist with several Grammys that will give a concert at the Pérez Galdós Theater on April 6; Bejo, a surprise rapper with millions of views in digital platforms, who will perform at The Paper Club on the last Saturday of the Festival, April 8; and León Benavente, who presents his new EP “La Selva”, after receiving excellent reviews with “2”, his second album, extolled by El País and ABC as the best national album in 2016, also on Saturday, April 8, at the Santa Ana Square, within a cartel celebrating the closing ceremony of the Film Festival’s 17th edition and which includes names such as: Carlos Sadness, a versatile artist triumphing in Latin America and Spain, who presents his album “La Idea Salvaje”; Aurora & The Betrayers, a soul rock band destined to be one of this year’s best national bands; Solo Astra, owners of the more impressive psychedelic pop within the national and regional circuit; Nestakilla, an urban artist with American influences, or Mendetz, exquisite dancing pop coming from Barcelona.
Besides, Los Vinagres, a Canarian band who presents their energetic album “El canto de la morena”, will open the Festival at The Paper Club, on the same day the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival opens, that is, March 31.
As usual, the festival wants to keep offering educational activities with professionals within the music industry. On this occasion, sound technician Luca Petricca, who has worked with bands such as Vetusta Morla, Xoel López, Zoé, León Benavente…, will be the one teaching a class to those interested in the direct sound design and its approach.
