Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Monday 5 April 2021. The fourth edition of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival’s Market of Almost-Finished Films (MECAS), which will be held from April 10 to 13 at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology, has programmed a wide variety of activities and meetings gathering over thirty film-industry experts.
In parallel with developmental meetings, MECAS offers among its open-public activities the discussion ‘Cómo sacar adelante tu película sin perderla ni perderte en el camino’ [How to get your film off the ground without losing it nor losing you along the way] on self-production models, with directors Ainhoa Rodríguez and Andrea Jurrieta, in addition to the previously announced ‘Proyección y coloquio de Video blues’ [Video Blues’ Screening and Discussion] with Emma Tusell, or the Masterclass on Creative Production given by María del Puy, among others. Those professionals in charge of sharing their opinions and experiences with the audience at the Elder Museum of Science and Technology will be on streaming from different locations in Gran Canaria in order to promote emblematic places from the city and the island as shooting sets. Participants will be able to interact and ask their questions and concerns. The full activity program will be available at the festival’s website. There’s free registration to the activities. All these meetings will be streamed live through the market’s social networks.
MECAS, in an attempt to help all participants with finding support and necessary funding for the completion of their projects, has invited in its fourth edition a total of 32 film-industry experts, including producers, distributors, sales agents, institutional and film archives representatives or programmers of international festivals. MECAS, which bets on a cinema produced outside most conventional funding methods, will give its participants the opportunity of meeting and talking with guest experts in order to develop their films.
The 19 finalists for the Almost-Finished Films and the Films to Be Made categories were announced last March 29th. Those selected for MECAS Island, the section aimed at local filmmakers with projects in any stage of production, were still unknown. They are the following: Déjame decirte otra vez te quiero, by José Víctor Fuentes; Imagine, by Susi Alvarado; La berma, by Agustín Domínguez; Last sunrise, by Anaïs Schaaff; Libertad de cátedra, by Jeniffer Castañeda; Tal vez, by Arima León; and Turtle Island, by Belén de la Barrera.
All Canarian filmmakers and producers selected for MECAS Island will have a counseling session with Isona Admetlla (adviser and audience designer) in order to prepare their pitches for their project presentation before the board of experts on April 12. Local participants will compete for a 1,200-euro prize awarded by Canary Islands Films to cover accreditation fees, travelling and lodging expenses for their participation in an international forum or market during 2021.
