Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Wednesday, 13 March 2019.- The 19th Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival’s jury is made of the following categories: Official Jury, Official Short Film Jury, Canarias Cinema Jury, Digital 104 Jury and the Popular Jury. They are all detailed below.
Official Jury
Marion Döring
Marion Döring studied French and Portuguese at the University of Mainz from 1972 to 1975 and, from 1976 to 1979, worked as a trainee and later editor at the daily newspapers Fuldaer Zeitung and Hessisch/Niedersächsische Allgemeine. Between 1980 and 1985 she worked as free-lance journalist in Berlin, from 1985 to 1988 as press attaché during the celebration of the 750 Years Anniversary of Berlin in 1987 and the designation of Berlin as the European Capital of Culture in 1988. She has been connected to the history of the European Film Academy since its very beginnings in 1988: first as PR manager of the European Film Awards, later as project manager for the Academy’s activities and publications, since 1996 as the Academy’s director. Since 2004, she has also been the producer of the European Film Awards, since 2006 managing director of EFA Productions gGmbH, the company producing the Awards together with the European Film Academy, and since 2012 producer of the EFA Young Audience Award.
Carlos Reviriego
Since January 2017, he is the Deputy Director and Head of Programming of the Spanish institution that preserves the national film heritage, Filmoteca Española. As a journalist and film critic, he was responsible for the film section of El Cultural (El Mundo), between 1999 and 2016 and was also Editor-in-Chief of Cahiers du cinéma: España from 2007 to 2010. He has published in Film Comment, Sight & Sound and other international and national publications, and frequently writes film reviews for El Cultural, Sofilm Spain, Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos, etc. He was the Artistic Director of TAI University of Arts (Madrid) between 2011 and 2014, where he taught Cinema History and Aesthetics, but currently he only gives occasional film lectures in various universities and film schools. He is currently, too, a member of the Programming Committee of Madrid’s German Film Festival. He has been part of the official juries of many film festivals, in and out of Spain.
Cédric Succivalli
Cédric Succivalli grew up in Marseille and then moved to Paris. He studied under Positif critic Michel Ciment and graduated from the University of Aix-Marseille. He went on to study at the University of Paris VII Denis Diderot, with a thesis on David Cronenberg’s Crash. He subsequently taught French at the University of Bath and UWE Bristol and worked for Arte France Cinéma as part of the film funding committee. A former performer for Carolyn Carlson and Rosalind Crisp, and a model for Margiela and Yamamoto, he has served as President of the International Cinephile Society for fifteen years, and during that time he has been regularly attending and writing about festivals around the world. He has served on juries at festivals such as the Noir in Fest. In 2018 he became a consultant for the Giornate degli Autori sidebar section of the Venice Film Festival.
Ela Bittencourt
Ela Bittencourt is a cinema critic and programmer currently based in São Paulo. Her articles on cinema and art appear in international publications, including Artforum, Art in America, Film Comment, Frieze, Hyperallergic, Sight & Sound and The Village Voice. Bittencourt acts as program advisor for Sheffield Doc/Fest and serves on selection committees of It’s All True (É Tudo Verdade) International Documentary Film Festival and Festival Semana de Cinema in Brazil. She also curates independently in the United States and in Latin America, and is a regular columnist for MUBI, where she writes the Latin American cinema column, as well as a founder of a film site, Lyssaria, dedicated to the films by women and from the Global South. Bittencourt holds M.A. and M.F.A degrees from Columbia University, in interdisciplinary fields, and has previously worked for a wide range of visual arts and cultural institutions.
Eva Vila
Born in Barcelona in 1975, Eva Vila is a scriptwriter and director, trained in music and art criticism. She regularly collaborates in various print media and participates in exhibition and discographic projects. In her role as filmmaker she has just premiered her first fiction feature Penélope (2018), a work with which the director is strongly acclaimed by critics as one of the great filmmakers in Spain. Her second feature film, Bajarí (2013), was awarded at various international festivals and was also nominated for the Gaudí Awards for Best Documentary in 2014. Her previous and first feature film, B-Side (2008) was presented at the festivals of Rotterdam, DocsLisboa, Cali, Warsaw, Cagliari and In-Èdit Barcelona, among others. Since 2003 she is in charge of the Master in Creative Documentary at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. In 2010 she founded the production company ARAKI FILMS. She participates as a jury in several international festivals such as Visions du RéeI (Switzerland).
Official Short Film Jury
Alejo Franzetti
Alejo Franzetti was born in Buenos Aires in 1985. He is a film director and programmer. He is a member of the selection committee of the Berlinale Shorts (Berlin International Film Festival). He studied in the Argentinian film school Universidad del Cine (FUC) and made films of different duration (Panke, El contrabajo, La destrucción del orden vigente, among others). He worked as an assistant director for Matías Piñeiro and Manuel Ferrari. He has been living in Berlin since 2012, where he was Thomas Arslan’s Meisterschüler, in the Universität der Künste. He has also performed as a teacher and programmer for INVASION, the Argentinian cinema festival in Berlin.
Gloria Fernández Adame
A graduate in Journalism, Gloria Fernández’s passion for cinema leads her to collaborate in the cultural section of several local magazines, to launch a film show on a local television and to participate in the productions of films such as EL VIAJE DE ARIÁN, by Eduard Bosch. Combining her tasks as head of the press and studies department in the Acceso Group Company, she publishes Antonio Banderas’ first authorized biography in 1995. In 2003, she decided to embark as an editor for CineAsia, the first Asian film magazine in Spain and sponsoring company for events related to oriental filmmaking. As one of the founders and directors of CineAsia, Gloria Fernández has assisted in various publications as well as coordinated and written books. She has also collaborated in scripts for DVD and Blu-ray editions for different distributors. Combining her work as a teacher in film schools, she is currently a programmer for the Sitges – International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (where, among other tasks, she selects short films for the Official Section of the Festival and also for the Nova Autoria section) and the Granada-Cines del Sur, and collaborates regularly in other festivals, institutions and cultural centres.
Liz Harkman
Liz has worked in the UK film industry for over 19 years starting out with roles in national institutions such as the British Film Institute and the UK Film Council. Her love of film festivals started with a voluntary position at the London Film Festival. She then travelled to Australia to work at Flickerfest Short Film Festival (Australia) where her passion for short film was born. Since then she has worked on Edinburgh International Film Festival, Animated Exeter, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival, and currently programmes for Pardi di domani at the Locarno Film Festival (Switzerland), supports Flickerfest and Tribeca Film Festival (US) with selection and sits of the Board of Trustees for Encounters Short Film Festival. Liz is also the Executive Director of charity organisation, Bristol Festivals, where she develops sector support programmes to develop a resilient festival sector in Bristol.
Canarias Cinema Jury
Andrea Guzmán Urzúa
Cultural manager and filmmaker. Artistic co-director of DocumentaMadrid International Documentary Film Festival. Of Chilean origin, she was born in Madrid and grew up in Cuba. She studied Computer Engineering in Havana, Direction of Photography in the EICTV of San Antonio de los Baños and Audiovisual Distribution in the ECAM, Madrid. She worked professionally in the audiovisual field from 1993 to 2011, in shootings and film festivals. She has been a coordinator and programmer for DocumentaMadrid; FIDOCS (Santiago de Chile); Miradas-Doc (Tenerife); Festival de Málaga and others. In 2011 she creates El Mar Films to distribute and program independently auteur films. In 2007 she founded DOCMA, the Documentalists Association, which she leaded until 2016, to promote and spread non-fiction cinema in Spain. In DOCMA, she directs and coordinates multiple seminars and showings with international figures. She has programmed documentary cinema in Filmoteca Española, Intermediae-Matadero, Casa de América, Cineteca Madrid, Sala Berlanga, Instituto Cervantes and cultural associations. She creates and directs the /3XDOX/Encuentro de Creadores festival,since 2012. She has participated as a jury in film festivals (Morelia Mexico, Seminci Valladolid, Filmadrid, Alcances Cádiz, Mostra de Lleida and others) and collaborates as an assistant for institutions such as Consejo Cine del Ecuador, Proimágenes Colombia or Canarias Cultura en Red).
Annamaria Scaramella
After graduating in Audiovisual Communication from the University of Roma Tre and achieving a master’s degree in Audiovisual Production from Middlesex University of London, from 2006 to 2009 she has worked in the audiovisual sector, between Roma and Madrid, performing different roles in the production and direction departments. In 2009 she joins the Arcipelago short films festival and the Roma Independent Film Festival (RIFF) team. Since 2011 she is the executive producer and programming coordinator of the Márgenes Festival. In 2015, along with the rest of the team, she starts Márgenes Distribution with the goal of spreading quality risky cinematographic proposals and to encourage the circulation of art cinema.
Manu Zapata
Born in Tafalla, Navarre, in 1973, he is a graduate in Administration and Business Management from the University of Navarra (1997) and has a diploma in Film Editing and from the E.C.A.M, the Madrid Film School (2000). He has worked as a film editor and a television production assistant in national TV networks such as Antena 3, Telecinco or Canal +, in shows like Ahora, Gran Hermano, Las Noticias del Guiñol, or making some Localia TV’s self-promotions. Regarding cinema, he has made teasers for films such as El misterio de Galíndez, directed by Gerado Herrero, and special effects editing works in Incautos, by Miguel Bardem. He coordinates cinema forums for Marcilla City Hall and the Minertea de Tafalla cultural association. He has been writing film reviews since January 2000 for Navarre’s Nafarpres group local magazines, and in December 2013 he starts collaborating weekly with Diario de Navarra, this region’s oldest and with greatest dissemination newspaper. He also publishes these reviews on his blog, www.vivazapata.net. He has been competing for almost two years, along with the team Los Lobos (The Wolves), in Antena 3’s cultural contest Boom!
Jurado Digital 104
Jonay García
Jonay García is a filmmaker and founding partner of the company Digital 104, where he coordinates Digital 104 Film Distribution, the distribution label for festivals, which distributes, in addition to his own catalog, the regional programs Canarias en Corto, Cantabria en corto and the Catalog of Andalusian Short Films.His most recent directorial work is the short film Las otras camas, which is currently being screened at festivals with notable success. In addition, he has directed short films such as Veneno, Ayer empezó todo o Acto primero.
Domingo J. González
Domingo J. González is a filmmaker and founding partner of the film production and distribution company Digital 104, where he works as the director of communication, productions and works. His filmography as director and screenwriter includes the short films 28 de agosto, Ridícula or Off. Currently, he is working on a documentary film project whose shooting is scheduled for autumn 2019.
Jairo López
Jairo López is a filmmaker and founding partner of the film production and distribution company Digital 104.He is the executive producer ot the feature films La viajante and Las postales de Roberto and numerous short films such as Las otras camas, Veneno or Ridícula. As a filmmaker, he has directed the feature films MODERNOS and JARDÍN BARROCO and many fiction short films such as Rhythmus, Como siempre or Amanece. He has been president of the Association of Filmmakers of the Canary Islands ‘Microclima’ and is the current manager of the Audiovisual Cluster of the Canary Islands.
Popular Jury
A total of 41 people make up the Popular Jury, which will grant the Audience Award of the 19th Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival.
