LUIS OSPINA

Born in Cali (Colombia, 1949). He pursued Film Studies at the University of Southern California (USC) and at UCLA. He was a part of the Grupo de Cali (Cali Group) with Carlos Mayolo and Andrés Caicedo. He has directed two feature-length fiction films, PURA SANGRE (PURE BLOOD, 1982) and SOPLO DE VIDA (BREATH OF LIFE, 1999), as well as seven feature documentaries and a score of documentary and fiction shorts, including: AGARRANDO PUEBLO (THE VAMPIRES OF POVERTY, 1978), co-directed with Carlos Mayolo, ANDRÉS CAICEDO: UNOS POCOS BUENOS AMIGOS (1986), LA DESAZÓN SUPREMA: RETRATO INCESANTE DE FERNANDO VALLEJO (THE SUPREME UNEASINESS: INCESSANT PORTRAIT OF FERNANDO VALLEJO, 2003) and UN TIGRE DE PAPEL (A PAPER TIGER, 2007). His most recent film is TODO COMENZÓ POR EL FIN (IT ALL STARTED AT THE END, 2015). Luis Ospina is the author of the book Palabras al viento, Mis sobras completas (2007). His work has received awards at international festivals such as Oberhausen, Biarritz, Havana, Sitges, Bilbao, Lille, Miami, Lima, Caracas, Antofagasta, Viña del Mar and Toulouse. Retrospectives of his work have been organized at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the Cineteca in Mexico, the Cinemateca de Venezuela, the Caixa Cultural in Rio de Janeiro, the Márgenes festival and the Cinemateca Distrital. Some of his works have been screened at the Cartier Foundation, the Tate Modern, the Queen Sofía Museum, the Georges Pompidou Centre, the Jeu de Paume, the Musée du Quai Branly and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He currently runs the Cali International Film Festival – FICCALI.
