“THE MAD ATLANTIC would go into production first. Mifune spent the last weeks of December 1965 prepping the film in Madrid, while Jun Fukuda, its director, flew ahead to scout locations.  Most of both pictures would actually be shot in Tokyo, but Mifune wanted enough location footage to give them the international look he felt would increase their marketability abroad. He allotted two weeks of filming with Fukuda off the Canary Islands for THE MAD ATLANTIC, and the director recalled how refreshing it was to film there instead of the crowded streets of Tokyo that he was used to: “…When we were shooting THE MAD ATLANTIC, the police stopped traffic for half a day for us – that would never happen in Japan”.”
